‘All those silly things – do them’: The striker’s journey from injury table to success with Athletic Bilbao
Thehe initial occasion the Athletic striker featured in English soil, an teenage appearing for Athletic Bilbao B against Bundesliga youth at Adams Park in fall 2015, he scored. On his next visit he appeared in England, against Sunderland following that, he converted. Another occasion, against the Citizens soon after, sure enough, he scored again. As he revisited to the city to play against the Red Devils at the sports complex in the 2017 season, he found the back of the net. It was a superb volley, as well. “Truly,” he states, “it’s one of the best goals in my career.” So Athletic did their duty: they took him off.
“I became very upset,” the Athletic striker says, then chuckling. “I’m sure there’s footage. We traveled to face United and I performed well. They kept me out of the latter period: I hadn’t yet signed agreement, I kept finding the net, there were lots of rumours, as you’d expect. I’m unsure regarding the Magpies’ pursuit, but I remember reading about Man United, the typical thing. It’s unclear the validity, but had they contacted me, I would have wanted to stay at Bilbao. I feel lucky to be here.”
Real Sociedad ease tension with bizarre win in unique Basque clash
At the training ground, the Basque Country, the day’s first practice is about to start; post-session, the short journey to the airport and a further journey to Britain, now to play Newcastle in the UCL on the upcoming match. Just saying those two words lights him up. It’s turning out to be a tough year for the club, due in part to the requirements of being here. Defeated late on in the derby on Saturday, they have secured just a single victory of their past eight league games and been defeated by Arsenal and the German side in Europe. However, take in the big picture, the major occasions he’s experienced and upcoming events, and a sense of thankful reflection from him.
In the 36 months since he had come back to Athletic, Guruzeta has been a semi-final participant, stopped at the gates the showpiece event by United, and has traveled on a traditional boat through the waterway accompanied by a huge crowd after securing the Spanish cup, the team’s initial silverware in four decades. Currently he stands as the club’s leading marksman in the European competition, where they are distinctive and making their first appearance in ten years. “I never imagined this,” he admits.
Guruzeta thought it difficult enough just to make the first team and his assessment was correct. The son of the one-time rival player his father and a regular attendee at the opposition side, Guruzeta is a product of Antiguoko, the San Sebastián club that nurtured the Arsenal manager, the former star and the Bournemouth manager. He signed for Athletic at 17 but after making his senior debut in that summer, he suffered a ACL injury, the cut, a drop in category and a return before he could earn his place, returning at 26 to experience the peak of his career.
“Entering the youth system not expecting to reach the senior squad but each step you advance through you’re remaining and you can see it getting closer. You make it and … departure is necessary.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in six games between his debut and that period. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games there and I tear my cruciate.
“It was a huge blow but In retrospect as a beneficial experience because it made me change the way I saw things. The rehabilitation process is difficult, but it aids growth. You cultivate routines previously lacking. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I attended practice and then head home, as a youngster does. At the complex, all resources are available, so do everything. Training, prehab. Get in the gym. Should your hips be uneven, work on that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, enhance it further. All those ‘silly things’: do them.
“At the top level you’re going to crash into players who have crashed into players 200,000 times. Extremely powerful. Reviewing old images: I had slender legs. So what happens, happens. Present-day images and the improvement is clear. Injury made me see that. Sessions end, but further effort is needed. Everyone else is ready, really ready; the same applies.”
Minutes are crucial. Guruzeta departed in tears in 2020, aged 23, joining the second tier. During his Sabadell spell in 2020-21, he got three strikes in forty appearances. At Amorebieta in the following period, the he found his form. “It’s a common path: temporary moves, ended deals. With a turnaround, dedication, confidence, and if one day they need someone for your role, they might come back for you. You have to be ready. When the opportunity came, a fantasy realized. The trophy success, compete continentally, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”
No wonder he says appreciate the experience. All the more so after the prior campaign which, at times, was focused on persistence. Previously the main threat with a high tally, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
